Back for the Irish after missing the 2001 season with a shoulder injury is senior Carrie Nixon. Nixon is the most decorated swimmer in Notre Dame history, earning All-America honors in 2000 in the 50-yard freestyle. A 14-time BIG EAST champion, Nixon also has earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly event at the NCAA meet, and in 2000 was named the BIG EAST Swimmer of the Championship.

  • EAGLES FALL TO MUSKINGUM 2-0(May 14) - The Emory softball team saw its season come toa close Sunday evening with a 2-0 loss to top-seeded MuskingumCollege (Ohio). The Eagles finished the season with a record of36-11, 6-2 in the UAA.Ashley Tobar took the loss for Emory, pitching six innings andallowing two runs on five hits. She finished the year with a recordof 11-5 and an ERA of 1.65.The Eagles recorded four hits for the evening, coming fromAlyson Moler, Sarah Morse, Amanda Kerns and Rachel Blume.The contest was scoreless through the first two and a halfinnings before the Muskies scored in the bottom of the third. Thepadded their lead in fifth with the second run.The Eagles lose only one senior, Emily Sunshine. Sunshine leavesEmory as the all-team leader in stolen bases for a career with 43on 47 attempts.EMORY EDGES ROANOKE 2-1(May 14) - The Emory softball team will take another shot attop-seeded Muskingum College after ending host Roanoke College'sseason with a 2-1 victory in NCAA Regional play. Emory now stands36-10 on the season.Today's contest was postponed from its original start time of12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. due to inclement weather. Emory'srematch with Muskingum is set for 9:30 p.m. Sunday evening.The Eagles fell behind early to the Maroons 1-0 in the secondinning. The two teams then battled for two more scoreless inningsbefore the Eagles tied the game in the fifth inning. FreshmanAmanda Kerns recorded her second homerun of the season to pullEmory even.Emory responded again in the bottom of the sixth. With the basesloaded, junior Lauren Haag was walked scoring senior Emily Sunshinewith what proved to be the game-winning run.Picking up the win for the Eagles was sophomore Kathy Gordon whomoves to 19-3 on the season and a 1.41 ERA. Gordon went 5.2innings, striking out four and allowing just one hit and no runs.EMORY DROPS 4-3 THRILLER TO MUSKINGUM(May 13) - Ellie Haubner singled with the bases loaded to scoreJuli Johnston giving Muskingum College a 4-3 extra inning win overEmory University. The win puts the Muskies in the championshipround of the NCAA Division III Softball Salem Regional.In that 11th inning, Johnson singled to start the inning, moved tosecond on a walk and to third base on a sacrifice bunt beforecoming home on the hit by Haubner.Muskingum's Erica Hoyt started and came back in relief to pick upthe win. It was her 21st of the season and the117th of her careerwhich ties a Division III record. Hoyt pitched a total of seveninnings, allowed just two hits and one run while punching outthree.Emory's Ashley Tobar took the loss in relief after throwing 5.2innings giving up six hits and one run to drop her record 10-4 onthe season.Muskingum got the scoring going when Lindsay Bramhall opened thehome half of the fourth inning with a single. Kari Hoying followedher with a homerun to center field to make the score 2-0.Emory cut the lead in half in the fifth inning when Kim Bandyopened the frame with a single and moved to second on a sacrificebunt by Elizabeth White. Bandy stole third and scored when CassiWitcher singled to right to field.Muskingum added a run in the fifth inning to make the score 3-1.Pinch hitter Megan McGowan singled with one out and then was liftedin favor of pinch runner Mary Taylor. After a single by Kim Tackettadvanced Taylor to second, Hauber delivered a two out single toplate Taylor.In the Emory seventh inning, the Eagles loaded the bases with oneout on singles by Carey Smith-Marchi, Witcher and Emily Sunshine.Muskie reliever Amy Mattin got Alyson Moler to hit a ground ball tosecond baseman Juli Johnston who cut down Smith-Marchi at homeplate. Betsy Brusinsma followed with an RBI single scoring Witcherand Sunshine to knot the game up at 3-3. After intentionallywalking Sarah Morse Mattin escaped further trouble by gettingLauren Hagg to ground out with the bases loaded once again.EAGLES DEFEAT ROANOKE COLLEGE 4-0(May 12)- The third-seeded Emory Eagles rode a complete-gameshutout by pitcher Ashley Tobar to defeat host Roanoke College 4-0in the Salem Regional of the NCAA Division III softball tournament.The Eagles improve to 35-9 this season and will next playtop-seeded Muskingum College at 2:00pm on Saturday at the MoyerSports Complex.Emory took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. EmilySunshine led off the inning with a bloop-single over the head ofRoanoke starting pitcher Amy Gillis' head. After getting moved tosecond on a sacrifice, Sunshine scored the first run of the game ona Betsy Bruinsma single to center.The Eagles doubled their lead in the bottom of the third, addinganother run. After two consecutive singles to get the inning going,the Eagles hit into a line-drive double-play. That left seniorEmily Sunshine on second with two outs. Sunshine went to third onan illegal pitch and then scored on a Sarah Morse double to the gapin left.Emory continued to put runs on the board, getting a third in thebottom of the fourth. After the Maroon retired the first twobatters, two hit batters, two singles, and a wild pitch led to thethird run. The run scored on a Alyson Moler single to left.For the third consecutive inning the Eagles were able to get a runacross the plate, this time a score in the fifth that made it afour-run game. Lauren Haag led off with a single to left and twobatters was able to take second on a Kim Bandy sacrifice. RachelBlume singled to left to follow. Haag rounded third and beat thethrow home. She didn't touch home on her first attempt, but wasable to reach out from behind the plate and touch safely.EAGLES EARN 4-3 VICTORY OVER THOMAS MORE(May 11) - The Emory softball team opened NCAA Regional play inSalem, Va., with a hard-fought 4-3 win over Thomas More College(Ky.). Emory now awaits the winner of Roanoke College (Va.) andDenison College (Ohio).Emory, 34-9 on the season, opened up 3-0 lead on the Saintsafter the first two innings. Sarah Morse collected an RBI when shesingled to right field, scoring Alyson Moler. After advancing tosecond on a wild pitch, Morse scored on an RBI single by CareySmith-Marchi.The second inning saw Cassi Witcher increase the lead thanks toan RBI double by Emily Sunshine.The fourth inning saw Thomas More collect three runs to tie thegame. After two and a half scoreless innings, Emory took the win onsingle by Betsy Bruinsma, as Witcher crossed the plate for thesecond time in the afternoon.Getting the win was Ashley Tobar who came on in relief of KathyGordon. Tobar now stands 10-3 on the season. In four innings ofwork she allowed one run on two hits, while striking out three.Witcher turned in a perfect performance at the plate to lead theEmory offense. She finished the day 2-2, scoring two runs. Morseand Lauren Haag were next, going 2-3 with an RBI each.Emory returns to action Friday at 4:00 p.m. when it takes on thewinner of the second seed Roanoke-seventh seed Denison contest.SARAH MORSE AND EMILY SUNSHINE NAMED COSIDA ACADEMICALL-DISTRICT(May 11) - Sarah Morse and Emily Sunshine were honored by CoSIDAas members of the Academic All-District team for the 2005-06 schoolyear.Morse was named to the first team for the second straight year,while Sunshine was awarded second team honors for the first time.Morse is one of the top performers on the softball team, batting.416, with a team-leading 39 RBI and five home runs. She was namedto the 2006 UAA all-conference first team. Away from the playingfield, she has a 3.91 GPA in American History and Literature and isthe president of the Varsity Athletes' Council.As the team's lead-off hitter, Sunshine leads the team in almostevery offensive category as she has scored 37 runs, has 62 hits and11 triples. She broke the record for most career steals this seasonand currently has 43 on 47 attempts. This season she was named tothe UAA First team. Sunshine has a 3.36 GPA while majoring inEducational Studies.To be eligible, a nominee must be at least a sophomore with a3.2 GPA and a starter or key reserve on their team. Emory nomineesare placed in the "college division" category, which is composed ofall NCAA Division II and III and NAIA schools.EMORY SELECTED TO COMPETE IN 2006 NCAACHAMPIONSHIPS(May 8) - The Emory softball team was chosen to compete in the2006 NCAA Championships, beginning May 11. The Eagles travel toSalem, Va., where they are the third seed in an eight teamregional.This year's selection marks the fifth time in six years thesoftball program will be competing in the NCAA post season. In 2002and 2003 Emory won the regional championship to advance to theDivision III Softball World Series.Seven teams will compete at five first-round sites and eightteams will compete at three first-round sites for a total of eightfirst-round sites. All first-rounds will use a double-eliminationformat.The eight-team first rounds will be held May 11-15 on thecampuses of competing institutions. The finals, hosted by PeaceCollege, will be held May 19-23 at the Walnut Creek SoftballComplex in Raleigh, N.C.The teams competing in the Salem Region are No. 1 Muskingum(39-4), No. 2 and host Roanoke (35-5), No. 3 Emory (33-9), No. 4Transylvania (31-10), No. 5 Piedmont (31-9), No. 6 Thomas More(25-13), No. 7 Denison (32-11) and No. 8 Hood (23-13).Emory will open competition against Thomas More with the gametime set for 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two opponents have only metone time, with Emory winning the contest 9-7 during the 2000season.EAGLES SPLIT WITH PIEDMONT(April 25) - The Emory softball team split a double-header onthe road Tuesday at Piedmont College (Ga.). Emory dropped the firstgame 2-1 in eight innings before bouncing back to shut-out theLions 8-0 in the finale.In the first game, Ashley Tobar took the loss for the Eagles,while in the second Kathy Gordon got the win. Tobar stands 9-3 onthe season, while Gordon is a team-leading 18-3.Emory concludes the regular season with a record of 33-9 and 6-2in the UAA. The Eagles now await word on the NCAA tournament.EMORY SWEPT BY SCAD(April 22) - The Emory Eagles dropped two home games to theSavannah College of Art & Design Bees, 7-1, 5-3, on Saturday.Big late-game outbursts in both games by the Bees, currently rankedNo. 14 in the NAIA, kept the Eagles from late comebacks.Sarah Morse knocked in three of the Eagles' four runs in thedoubleheader leading the Eagles with three hits on the day.The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of gameone and held on with three shutout innings by pitcher Kathy Gordon,but SCAD bats came alive in the fourth. The Bees added seven runsin the last four innings capped by a three-run seventh toeffectively put the game out of reach.Lauren Eaves took the loss for the Eagles giving her a 6-3record. Eaves relieved Gordon in the fourth inning and pitched oneand two-thirds innings giving up three runs and five hits notchingone strikeout. Gordon reentered in the sixth inning and totaledfive and one-third innings pitched with four runs and nine hits.Eagles batters only picked up four hits with only one run pickedup on a Sarah Morse single in the first. Emily Sunshine, ElizabethWhite and Carey Smith-Marchi each had one hit. Alyson Moler scoredthe Eagles' lone run.In game two the Eagles were toppled by three big swings. Athree-run home run in the first inning for SCAD gave the Bees alead they would not lose. Back-to-back solo shots in the seventhmade that lead stand up.The Eagles out hit SCAD with nine hits compared to eight, plusthe Bees had five errors. Emory could not capitalize on theirchances going 1-14 with runners in scoring position.The Eagles pulled the deficit to 3-2 in the third on an RBIdouble by Moler and an RBI single by Sarah Morse. Morse knocked inanother in the seventh but the Eagles could not overcome thethree-run lead, falling 5-3.Ashley Tobar pitched the complete game for the Eagles giving upeight hits and five runs while striking out two in seven innings.With the loss, her record for the season is 9-3.The Eagles record moves to 32-8. They will finish out theregular season with an away doubleheader against regional foePiedmont on Tuesday.EMORY SWEEPS LAGRANGE ON THEROAD(April 18) - The Emory softball team took an importantdouble-header sweep from south region foe LaGrange College (Ga.) onTuesday evening in LaGrange.The first contest saw the teams battle into extra innings withEmory earning a 2-1 victory after eight. The winning pitcher wasKathy Gordon who is now 17-3 on the year. Alyson Moler scored thetying run for the blue and gold, while Sarah Morse provided thegame-winning single.Emory lit up the Panthers in the second game, winning 9-2.Ashley Tobar was the winning pitcher. She received offensive helpfrom Moler, Cassi Witcher and Betsy Bruinsma.Up next for the Eagles is their home finale against SavannahCollege of Art and Design (Ga.). The double-header begins at 1:00p.m.SOFTBALL SWEEPS MARYVILLEThe Emory softball team moved to 30-6 on the season with adouble-header sweep ofMaryville College on Saturday in Maryville, Tenn.The first game saw Kathy Gordon pick up the victory as she held theScots scoreless in a1-0 victory.Game two saw Emory explode for seven runs in a 7-1 win as AshleyTobar got the win.Up next for the Eagles is a road trip to LaGrange, Ga., to faceLaGrange College. Thedouble-header is set for a 5:00 p.m. start.EAGLES SWEEP AGNES SCOTT(April 13) - The 22nd-ranked Emory softball team blasted AgnesScott college on Thursday, winning a double header by scores of14-0 and 21-0. Both contests ended after five innings of play.Taking the win during the first contest was Kathy Gordon, whoimproves to a team-best 15-3 on the season. During the second gameLauren Eaves picked up her sixth win of the season and stands 6-2.The Eagles' two wins today have them going 4-0 against theScotties this year, outscoring them by a total of 65-3.Up next for Emory (28-6) is a trip to Maryville, Tenn., to takeon the Maryville College Fighting Scots in a double-header onSaturday April 15 at 1:00 p.m. The two squads met to open the yearwith the Eagles winning 8-0 in both contests.EMORY SWEEPS GEORGIA WESLEYAN ON THEROAD(April 6) - The 22nd-ranked Emory softball team traveled toMacon, Ga., and swept the Georgia Wesleyan College Pioneers by ascores of 10-0 and 17-1 to improve to 26-6 on the season.The first contest saw Kathy Gordon improve to 14-3 on theseason, while helping guide the Eagles to a 10-0 shut-out victory.The second and final game of the evening had Ashley Tobarpicking up the win, with Emory blasting the Pioneers by a score of17-1. Tobar now stands 7-1 on the season.Up next for the Eagles is a trip across town to Agnes ScottCollege, April 13, for a double-header. The first game is set for4:00 p.m. The contest was originally scheduled to be played atEmory, but was moved to the Agnes Scott field.EAGLES HONOR SUNSHINE ON SENIOR DAY;SPLIT WITH PIEDMONT(April 2) - The Emory softball team honored team captain EmilySunshine, and after losing a heartbreaker in 12 innings, came backwith an 8-0 win in the second game of a Senior Day double headeragainst Piedmont College.In between the two games, the Eagles honored centerfielderSunshine, the team's lone senior, for her successes in four yearsat Emory including only one error in her career and a team leading11 triples this season.Eagle pitching gave up only two earned runs in a total of 18innings on day, while Alyson Moler led Eagles hitters with fourhits on the day.Moler was one of four Eagles to collect three hits in game two,the others being Sarah Morse, Lauren Haag, and Amanda Kerns. As awhole the Eagles got 18 hits in six innings.Lauren Eaves pitched nine innings in the two games with a reliefappearance in the first game and a six-inning complete game shutoutin the second.Eaves allowed only two baserunners, a hit and a walk, in thesecond game. Eaves gave up only two runs the whole day, both beingrunners placed on second base in extra innings as a part of thetiebreaker system.Kim Bandy had three RBI in the second game including a two-runtriple. Cassi Witcher and Haag also had two RBI in game two.The first game, a three hour, twenty minute marathon, was morethan twice as long as the first. The Eagles fell, 5-4, in thetwelth inning.The game was scoreless through the first three innings. Piedmontpicked up a run in the fourth inning; the Eagles tied in the sixthinning on an RBI single by Betsy Bruinsma.As the game entered the eighth inning the tiebreaker rule wentinto effect, placing a runner at second base to start each halfinning.Both teams were able to score that runner in the first two extrainnings including a squeeze play in the bottom of the eighth byHaag to score Bandy.The Eagles kept the opponents from scoring in the top of thetenth and eleventh, but were unable to plate the winning run bothtimes due to line-drive double plays.Piedmont was able to score two in the top of the twelvth. TheEagles answered with one run on an RBI single by catcher RachelBlume, but were unable to plate Laura Davie who pinch hit forBlume.Blume led the Eagles with two RBI in game one.The Eagles used all three of their pitchers in game one. StarterAshley Tobar allowed only one run in five innings while knotchingfour strikeouts.Eaves relieved Tobar in the top of the sixth keeping twoinherited runners from scoring. Kathy Gordon, who was slated tostart game two for the Eagles, came in in the ninth for the finalfour innings. Gordon gave up just one earned run and took the loss.The Eagles, No. 22 in the nation, are now 24-6 on the season.The Eagles continue regional play this Thursday at GeorgiaWesleyan. Their next home game is the following Thursday, April 13,at 3 p.m. against Agnes Scott College (Ga.).EAGLES SWEEP LAGRANGE(April 1) - The Emory softball team took two from visitingLaGrange College on Saturday. Emory won the first game 4-1 beforecoming back to shut-out the Panthers 3-0 in the second.The Eagles jumped out on LaGrange in the first game with tworuns in the first. The blue and gold added two more runs in thesixth to build a 4-0 lead. LaGrange's comeback fell short as it wasonly able to muster one run in the seventh.Lauren Haag was a perfect 2-2 with 2 RBI, while Cassi Witcherand Betsy Bruinsma were 2-3. Witcher and Bruinsma each scored a runas well.Picking up the win for the Eagles was Ashley Tobar, who nowstands 6-1 on the season.In the second contest, Emory rode the pitching of Kathy Gordon,who turned in a complete game, while allowing only three hits.Sarah Morse turned in a solid effort for the blue and gold,going 2-3 and scoring one run. Collecting hits for the game wereEmily Sunshine, Haag and Bruinsma.The Eagles scored the first run of the game in the third inningbefore two more in the sixth to get the win.Emory now stands 23-5 on the season. Up next for the Eagles is adouble-header with Piedmont College (Ga.), Sunday. Gametime is setfor 1:00 p.m.EMORY SWEEPS GA WESLEYAN, 10-0,11-0(March 29) - The Emory Eagles softball team swept the GeorgiaWesleyan College Pioneers 10-0, 11-0, in a double header onWednesday. Emory pitchers allowed only two baserunners in the firstgame and one in the second striking out a total of 18 in 10innings.Freshmen Carey Smith-Marchi and Kim Bandy led the team with fourhits each for the day. Senior Emily Sunshine had a triple in eachgame giving her 10 on the season.Ashley Tobar had 10 strikouts in five innings allowing one hitand one walk in the first game. With the win she advanced to 5-1 onthe year earning her third shutout of the year.Bandy, Rachel Blume, and Betsy Bruinsma each had two hits forthe Eagles in the first game, with Lauren Haag and Bruinsma eachadding 2 RBI.In game two, Kathy Gordon got the win for the Eagles facing just12 batters in four innings giving up one hit, no walks, and earningeight strikeouts. The one runner who reached was caught stealing bythe catcher Blume, who also threw a runner out stealing in gameone.Smith-Marchi led the team with three hits in the second game,with Sunshine, Bandy and Sarah Morse all getting two hits. Morse,Sunshine and Blume knocked in two runs.Morse had a total of three RBI on the day giving her a teamleading total of 28 for the season.Lauren Eaves finished the game with a perfect fifth inningWith the wins the Eagles, ranked 22nd in the NCAA Division IIIby the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association, moved to 21-5 onthe season.The Eagles next games are at home on Saturday, April 1 at 1 p.m.against LaGrange College (Ga.). They then host Piedmont College(Ga.) at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Eagles are 8-0 this season at theirhome park.EMORY LANDS SIX ON ALL-UAASQUAD(March 29) - The Emory softball squad placed six players on the2006 All-UAA softball squad, highlighted by Sarah Morse, EmilySunshine and Ashley Tobar on the first team.Being named to the second team were Kim Bandy, Kathy Gordon andLauren Haag.Morse led the Emory contingent in batting during the UAAChampionships, batting .480 with 12 hits, seven runs scored, fourRBI and two homeruns. Sunshine was right behind Morse, batting.462. She collected 12 hits as well, with six RBI and scoring fiveruns. Sunshine also had three stolen bases on four attempts.Rounding out the first team selections was Tobar, who finishedthe tournament with a record of 2-1 and an ERA of 1.35.Bandy batted .268 for the tournament, while scoring seven runsand collecting six hits. Gordon turned in a solid effort on themound, going 4-0 with an ERA of 0.28. Haag rounded out the Emorycontingent being honored, batting .333 with seven hits, six RBI andfive runs scored.This marks the second year in a row that Morse and Sunshine havebeen named first team all conference.Emory finished second in the conference with a record of 6-2.EAGLES SPLIT ON FINAL DAY OF UAACOMPETITIONThe Emory softball team split on the final day of play at theUAA Championships. The Eagles defeated Brandeis 10-2 before fallingto Washington 1-0.Emory finishes the UAA in second place with a record of 5-2.In the win over Brandeis Kathy Gordon picked up the win to moveto 11-2 on the season. Ashley Tobar took the loss in the gameversus Washington.Up next for Emory is a home double-header versus GeorgiaWesleyan College on Wednesday, March 29 at 2:00 p.m.EMORY SHUTS OUT ROCHESTER5-0(March 17)- The Emory softball team moved to 4-1 in the UAA with a5-0 shut-out victory over the University of Rochester(N.Y.).Picking up the win for Emory was Ashley Tobar. Through fiveinnings she worked ano-hitter. She finished the contest allowing no runs on threehits.Emory was led at the plate by Emily Sunshine and Amanda Kerns, eachhitting a home run.The Eagles close out the UAA Championship with a doubleheader onSaturday againstBrandeis University at 10:00 a.m. and Washington University at12:30 p.m.EMORY SPLITS ON THIRD DAY AT UAA CHAMPIONSHIPS(March 16) - The Emory softball team split its two contests onThursday at the UAA Championships. The Eagles fell to Washington4-0 before bouncing back to defeat Case Western Reserve 6-0.Emory fell behind 3-0 to Washington in the first inning 3-0,attempting to play catch-up the rest of the contest. WashU addedone more run in the third inning for the final score. Taking theloss for Emory was Lauren Eaves.Kim Bandy and Rachel Blume led the way with a hit a piece forthe blue and gold.In the day's second game the Eagles returned to winning form ina 6-0 victory over Case Western Reserve.Betsy Bruinsma connected on a homerun for the Eagles to helplead the offensive attack. She also finished the contest with twoRBI. Sarah Morse finished 2-3 from the plate, while also scoring arun.Kathy Gordon picked up the win for Emory, going the distance,while striking out 11. She allowed no runs and only five hits. Thismarks Gordon's third win of the tournament and she now stands 10-2on the season.Up next for Emory is a match-up with the University of Rochesterat 12:30 p.m. on Friday.EAGLES REMAIN UNDEFEATED IN UAAPLAY(March 15) - The Emory softball team remained undefeated afterthe second day of play at the UAA Championships in Sanford, Fla.The Eagles defeated Rochester 8-0, while also taking down Brandeis7-1.Picking up the win against Rochester was Ashley Tobar. Tobar hada no-hitter going through five innings of play. She now stands at aperfect 3-0 on the season.Kathy Gordon notched her team-leading ninth win of the season inthe victory over Brandeis. She is now 9-2 on the season.Up next for the Eagles is a match-up with rival WashingtonUniversity. Game time is set for 10:00 a.m. on Thursday.EMORY CRUSHES CASE WESTERN RESERVE8-0(March 14) - The Emory softball team opened the UAAChampionships with an 8-0 victory over Case Western ReserveUniversity (Ohio). Getting the win for the Eagles was sophomoreKathy Gordon who now stands 8-2 on the season.The Eagles and Spartans battled the first three innings withneither team able to score any runs. The fourth inning however sawEmory explode for four runs and three more in the fifth to put thegame out of reach.Leading the way for the Eagles was Sarah Morse and EmilySunshine, both going 3-4. Morse connected on her team-leadingfourth home run, as well as accounting for half the scoring with anRBI and three runs scored. Eaves pickedup her third win of the season and now stands 3-0.Up next for Emory is a trip to Virginia Beach, Va., to competein the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament.EAGLES SET GAME SCORING RECORD IN FIRSTTHREE INNINGS(Feb. 26) - After winning a closely fought battle 5-3 in gameone against Agnes Scott College (Ga.), the 11th-ranked Emory Eaglesopened up on the Scotties scoring 17 in the first and setting anEmory record for most runs scored in a single game with a 25-0shutout.The Eagles scored all of their record setting 25 runs in thefirst three innings.The first 16 Eagle batters reached safely before the Scottiesfinally recorded an out. By the time the first inning was done theEagles had sent 22 to the plate and scored 17 on 12 hits and sevenerrors.When it was all over, the Eagles had put 21 hits on the board,second only to another Agnes Scott game in 2001. That 22-hit,24-run game for Emory was the previous record holder for most runsin a game.The Eagles added six more in the second and two in the third toget the total to 25.Junior Sarah Morse tied the Emory record for most RBI in asingle game with six including a 3-run home run, her second homerun of the season. Morse leads the team with 13 RBI this season.Freshman Kim Bandy had four RBI to bring her season total to 12.Sophomore Cassi Witcher tied the Eagles record with four runsscored, while five more Eagles scored three.In her first collegiate start, freshman Alyson Moler tied forsecond most hits in a game with four, the first four hits in hercareer. Gordon struck out seven on the way to earning herstaff-leading fourth win of the season.The Eagles took the lead in the first on RBI singles by RachelBlume and Lauren Haag, who led the Eagles in game one with threehits and two RBI.They added two more in the third on an RBI double by Haag and anRBI single by Bandy.The Scotties got back two in top of the fourth and another inthe fifth to pull it to 4-3.Eaves relieved Gordon to start the sixth inning and stuck outthe first four batters she face. Millsaps jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the firstinning only to see Emory battle back, but fall short by one run.The second game had Emory returning to its winning ways with a7-2 decision. Gordon came back to pick up the victory.The Eagles, now 7-1 on the season, were scheduled to be inaction Sunday, Feb. 19 at home against Agnes Scott College. Morse's homerun marked her second of the season.Up next for the Eagles is a trip to Montgomery, Ala., where theywill face Huntingdon College on Friday in a double header beginningat 1:30 p.m.EMORY SWEEPS MARYVILLE COLLEGE TO OPEN THESEASON(Feb. 11) - The Emory Eagles swept adoubleheader against Maryville College (Tenn.), 8-0, 8-0, riding on five-hit performances by Sarah Morse and Emily Sunshine andshutouts by Kathy Gordon and Lauren Eaves.Morse went 5 for 7 with a home run and two doubles and five RBIover two games. Sunshine was 5 for 8 with four runs scored.Gordon had eight strikeouts in the first game, and Eaves allowedjust one hit in the second as both games ended in the sixth inningdue to the mercy rule.The Eagles had 13 hits in the first game and took the lead dueto good base running to take advantage of Maryville miscues.The Eagles took the lead early in the first game scoring two inthe bottom of the first inning. Sunshine doubled followed by asingle by freshman Kim Bandy. Bandy stole second and the two scoredon wild pitches by Fighting Scots pitcher Kerri Onks.The Eagles added another in the third on a leadoff double byMorse followed by an RBI double by catcher Rachel Blume.In the fourth, the Eagles started to pile it on scoring four.Betsy Bruinsma and Ali Braverman singled to start the inning. EmilySunshine then beat out a bunt single, and the throw to first gotaway allowing the runners to advance and Bruinsma to score.Sunshine stole second, and Braverman scored on the throw to second.The errors ended up costing Maryville nothing as Morse hit a2-run homer to put the Eagles up 7-0.The sixth inning resembled the third with Morse getting aleadoff hit and after a double by Amanda Kerns being knocked in byBlume. That gave the Eagles a 8-0 lead to end the game by the mercyrule.Morse was 3 for 4 with two RBI and three runs while freshmanBlume was 2 for 3 with two RBI in her collegiate debut. Sunshinewas 3 for 4 with two runs scored and Bruinsma added two hits.Gordon allowed only three hits and no walks to get her first winof the season.The second game started more slowly but finished nearly the samewith an 8-0 win on 12 hits.The early story was the pitching of Eaves who retired the first11 batters, seven of which on infield groundballs. Eaves did notallow a hit until the fifth inning.The Eagles scored one in the second on a sacrifice fly bySunshine to plate freshman Amanda Kerns.In the third the Eagles scored two starting with threeconsecutive infield hits. Cassi Witcher led off with a bullet atthe third baseman which she barely managed to knock down to holdWitcher to a single. Back-to-back bunt singles by Sunshine andBandy loaded the bases for the Eagles. Morse knocked in one with asacrifice fly, and Kerns knocked in one with a ground out to secondbase giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.The next two innings were scoreless until a five-run outburst inthe sixth sent the teams home early. Five of the first six Emoryhitters reached base on four singles leaving two on and giving theeagles a 6-0 lead. Morse capped off the day with a two run doubledown the left field line to give the Eagles the 8-0 lead.Eaves gave up only one hit and two walks for the Eagles in thesix inning shutout.Witcher, Sunshine, Bandy, Morse, and Bruinsma each had two hitswith Witcher and Sunshine scoring twice each and Morse knocking inthree.The Eagles will next play tomorrow against Georgia PerimeterCollege. The game was scheduled to be played away but has beenmoved to Emory due to field conditions at Georgia Perimeter. Thedoubleheader will begin at 1 pm.
